SCS is committed to making learning as accessible as possible both locally and across the globe. We are continuously expanding our list of over 540 online learning opportunities. From languages to accounting, we offer flexible learning opportunities.

Our online courses are instructor-led and delivered through the University of Toronto’s Learning Management Engine – Quercus. Quercus uses weekly, real time modules and has tools for engagement and community building. Course preparation has built in flexibility so you can read, study, and complete assignments on your own time.

You will communicate with your instructors via discussion boards and/or email. Some online courses include live, interactive webinars. If you’re unable to attend the live webinar, you will be able to view a recording of the webinar on your own schedule.

To work as an English-Chinese translator, you must be able to render complex ideas from the fields of law, commerce and literature. This online course will build your qualifications and skills. If you've completed Russian Level IV or have equivalent low-intermediate language skills, this course is for you. You'll learn to read Russian literary and journalistic prose in a setting that provides you with the necessary grammar base and reading strategies to read independently. We'll examine all the readings thoroughly in class: they'll serve as the material for classroom discussion, and a review of grammar when necessary. Gain the skills to read Russian prose including headlines and moderately difficult articles in newspapers and on the internet with the aid of a dictionary.   Review grammar. syntax, and pronunciation as required. Become familiar with the advanced grammatical and syntactic structures used primarily in written Russian. Acquire strategies to approach an unfamiliar text in Russian and read more effectively. Expand your ability to discuss abstract concepts in Russian. Better appreciate the richness of Russian through an exploration of its use in literature.

This course is for you if you're ready to take on more difficult Japanese grammar, idioms and complexities and to immerse yourself in a language with underlying principles very different to those of English. You'll have opportunities to communicate in Japanese at a more subtle level in real-life situations such as shopping, the workplace and daily life. You'll appreciate more about Japanese culture and business practices, history and art. To determine your Japanese language level, please take a moment to complete our Japanese Placement Exercise before registering. Expand your vocabulary for everyday topics and activities. If you've successfully completed 1563 French: Level IV or have the equivalent skills, this course will help make your speech more precise and complex. You'll be able to discuss social issues with greater confidence and express your point of view. You'll be comfortable writing on topics like art, media and the environment and describing your experiences and impressions. Reinforce overall proficiency in everyday and job-related language. Understand the main points of radio or TV programs on current affairs or topics of personal interest. Gain a more thorough command of grammar, syntax and vocabulary.

The better your French, the greater your opportunities in Canada's civil services and other fields including law, politics and hospitality. If you've successfully completed 0652 French: Level V or have the equivalent skills, this course will help you speak more fluently and spontaneously. By the course's end, you should be able to enter into conversation, without preparation, on topics that are familiar or pertinent to everyday life and work. Reinforce overall proficiency to express experiences and events, hopes and ambitions. Connect phrases so you can explain ideas and plans and express opinions. Narrate a story or relate the plot of a book and describe your reactions.
