SCS is committed to making learning as accessible as possible both locally and across the globe. We are continuously expanding our list of over 540 online learning opportunities. From languages to accounting, we offer flexible learning opportunities.

Our online courses are instructor-led and delivered through the University of Toronto’s Learning Management Engine – Quercus. Quercus uses weekly, real time modules and has tools for engagement and community building. Course preparation has built in flexibility so you can read, study, and complete assignments on your own time.

You will communicate with your instructors via discussion boards and/or email. Some online courses include live, interactive webinars. If you’re unable to attend the live webinar, you will be able to view a recording of the webinar on your own schedule.

Water is one of our most precious resources and managing it in a changing world requires new approaches. In this course, you’ll explore connections between water and broader economic and social issues, including food production, energy, transboundary conflict and health. You’ll examine the impacts of climate change and human demand in developed and developing countries. You’ll emerge with a greater appreciation of the benefits and limitations of current practices, and the challenges facing planners, managers, policy-makers, advocates and sustainability professionals. After completing this course you’ll be able to: Identify and explain current critical issues related to water resources management, Assess future evolving challenges to water resources, both due to human demands and environmental change, Analyze the similarities and differences between developed and developing countries,  Evaluate a variety of approaches which are used in managing water resources, including the benefits and limitations involved, and Assess the need for new approaches to water resources management in a changing world.

To fight anthropogenic climate change, we must first understand its complexities and causes. In this course, you’ll explore the physical science behind climate change and its dire consequences on human and ecological systems around the world. You’ll examine and critique sustainable development approaches we can take to mitigate change and adapt to it. You’ll learn the political and social history of our responses to climate change, and explore global case studies that highlight differences in vulnerabilities and possibilities for action.   Understand the fundamentals of climate change, including the science behind it, our current knowledge regarding how human activities have altered the climate system, and outcomes for society and ecosystems. Critically assess challenges related to climate change impacts to diverse sectors such as agriculture and food security, forests, coastal and marine systems, and more, as well as the interplay between climate change and other environmental challenges, such as deforestation. Contrast the experiences and challenges faced by people and places in the Global North and Global South. Describe the need for climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the relevance of vulnerability and resilience when it comes to climate change action. Critique approaches to addressing climate change, including understanding best principles and the relationship to sustainable development.

This course teaches Korean language focusing on advanced grammar using the contemporary topics and trends in Korean society. Become proficient in speaking, writing, listening, and reading at the upper intermediate level. Read and write about contemporary topics, and understand and enjoy some literature while becoming more acquainted with Korean perspectives. Develop a deeper appreciation of Korean literature and improve reading comprehension by introducing poems, essays, and traditional tales, etc. Gain a more in-depth understanding of Korean popular and traditional culture.
