SCS is committed to making learning as accessible as possible both locally and across the globe. We are continuously expanding our list of over 540 online learning opportunities. From languages to accounting, we offer flexible learning opportunities.

Our online courses are instructor-led and delivered through the University of Toronto’s Learning Management Engine – Quercus. Quercus uses weekly, real time modules and has tools for engagement and community building. Course preparation has built in flexibility so you can read, study, and complete assignments on your own time.

You will communicate with your instructors via discussion boards and/or email. Some online courses include live, interactive webinars. If you’re unable to attend the live webinar, you will be able to view a recording of the webinar on your own schedule.

0582 - Chinese (Mandarin): Level I

Course
This course will give you a solid introduction to speaking, reading and writing Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin). Even with no previous background in the language, you'll learn how to greet Chinese people and have simple exchanges in business and other settings. You'll learn Chinese characters, grasp the elements of pronunciation, explore culture, and talk about daily life using the 20 most important verbs. Begin to use appropriate grammar, syntax and vocabulary in simple everyday conversation about yourself, your family and your immediate surroundings. Understand the basic of how Chinese characters are formed, in full-form and simplified versions. Appreciate the pronunciation of Mandarin and its tonal character.

0586 - Spanish: Level I

Course
You don't need any prior knowledge of Spanish to take this course. You'll start with simple grammar and phonetics and engage in role-playing and exercises that help you learn the basics of conversational Spanish. You'll be able to greet people, request and give information about your immediate surroundings, express simple likes and dislikes and describe where you live and people you know. Begin to use appropriate grammar, syntax and vocabulary in everyday situations. Form simple sentences in Spanish about yourself and your family. Pronounce Spanish clearly.

0588 - Italian: Level I

Course
You don't need any prior knowledge of Italian to take this course, just a love of the language. You'll start with simple grammar and phonetics and engage in role-playing and exercises that help you learn the basics of Italian. You'll be able to greet people, request and give information about your immediate surroundings and express simple likes and dislikes. You'll begin to learn how to make yourself understood when travelling in Italy or ordering in restaurants. Write a simple postcard sending holiday greetings. Make yourself understood in everyday situations about yourself and your family. Begin to pronounce Italian clearly.

0592 - Spanish: Level V

Course
Expand your ability to function in Spanish. Learn more complex grammatical structures and idiomatic expressions. Increase your knowledge of Spanish language etiquette. You'll improve the precision of your speech, learn how to make subtle statements, and gain confidence discussing and analyzing issues. Students who enroll in this course are already comfortable expressing their opinions. For instance, they will be able to describe the biggest social ill in their community and how to solve it.   Reinforce proficiency in all four communication skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing  Expand the sophistication of our language for both work and private communications Gain a more thorough command of grammar, syntax and vocabulary

Course
If you've completed 0586 - Spanish: Level I or have equivalent language skills, this course will expand your command of grammar and conversation. Role-playing, simulations and other exercises will build your essential vocabulary and your knowledge of structures, idioms and cultural etiquette. You'll be able to participate in social events at a basic level, give simple instructions and directions and describe people and places in a simple way. Use appropriate grammar, syntax and vocabulary in everyday situations. Build your essential vocabulary. Deepen your understanding of Spanish-language structures, idioms and cultural etiquette.

Course
If you've completed 0442 - Japanese: Level I or possess the equivalent language skills in grammar and speech, this course will let you build your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Role-playing and exercises will increase your vocabulary and your familiarity with language structures and idioms. With a greater understanding of cultural etiquette, you'll be able to participate in social events in a basic way, give simple instructions and directions and describe people and places. To determine your Japanese language level, please take a moment to complete our Japanese Placement Exercise before registering. Use appropriate grammar, syntax and vocabulary in everyday speech about yourself and people you know. Get to know more language structures and idioms. Improve your understanding of cultural etiquette.

Course
If you've completed Levels III and IV or possess the equivalent language skills, this course will expand your ability to speak Japanese. You'll refine your grammar and idiomatic expression and your understanding of cultural etiquette. You'll learn to speak more precisely about familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school and leisure. Enhance your understanding of Japanese culture and business practices and your ability to show goodwill in a business setting. To determine your Japanese language level, please take a moment to complete our Japanese Placement Exercise before registering. Deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in Japan. Expand your knowledge of grammatical structures and idiomatic expressions. Better appreciate the role of language in Japanese history and art.

Course
This course is designed for learners with prior knowledge of Russian who want to refine their language skills. You will expand your vocabulary, explore more complex grammar structures, and develop the ability to express opinions, give suggestions, and discuss past events. The course will incorporate authentic Russian-language materials to support listening, speaking, and reading comprehension. Express original thoughts using an expanded vocabulary while adhering to social and cultural etiquette. Expand your ability to speak and write Russian.

0633 - Translation: Spanish Level III

Course
To work as an English-Spanish translator, you must be able to handle complex business and cultural demands. With this self-study Level III course, you're well on your way. Continue to build your analysis and translation skills and qualifications. Get supportive feedback on your oral and written translations. All materials are provided in PDF format and you communicate with your instructor by email.  Handle common yet difficult translations. Avoid anglicisms and awkward syntax. Render subtle and nuanced thoughts into written form. Translate more complex material.

Course
This introductory course in conversational Russian requires no prior knowledge. You will learn the Cyrillic alphabet, basic vocabulary, and fundamental grammar structures. Use simple language for everyday situations in your immediate surroundings. Begin to pronounce Russian clearly.
