Connections, Careers, and Community: Highlights from the Inaugural SCS Career Expo and Networking Event

The U of T Hart House Great Hall is full of people visiting exhibitor booths at the SCS Career Expo

“I gained insights into the job market, and speaking with various hiring managers helped me see how I can better prepare for my career.” – Anita Lee, event attendee

Last week the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies (SCS) welcomed over 1000 professionals, job seekers, and lifelong learners for the first ever SCS Career Expo and Networking Event. With a packed agenda, a bustling exhibitor hall, and an inspiring speaker lineup, the event was a celebration of growth, opportunity, and the power of professional connection.

Designed to support learners in their career development journey, the Expo offered a unique mix of networking opportunities, industry insights, and professional services, including resume reviews and headshot sessions, all under one roof.

“We wanted to create a space where our learners could confidently explore their next career steps while building real-world connections,” says Juan Mavo-Navarro, Assistant Dean, Lifelong Learning & Innovation. “Seeing so many meaningful conversations unfold was incredibly rewarding.”

The event welcomed 24 exhibitors from industries such as real estate, finance, healthcare, and government, all eager to connect with talent and share insights into their fields. The exhibitor hall buzzed with energy as attendees explored new opportunities and made valuable connections.

“SCS attracts people who are driven, curious, and eager to grow, and that spirit was felt throughout the event,” said Ann Park, SCS Blueprint Career Services Career Strategist. “Our exhibitors were genuinely impressed by the diversity and professionalism of everyone who attended, from current students to career changers, and experienced professionals exploring new paths.”

Participants also had the chance to receive expert feedback on their resumes from career advisors at Achēv, and to walk away with polished, professional headshots to enhance their LinkedIn profiles.

A highlight of the day was the guest speaker panel, which drew a standing-room-only crowd. Leaders from diverse sectors shared their career stories, offered insights into navigating career transitions, and answered audience questions with honesty and encouragement.

“Our goal was to leave people feeling inspired and empowered,” said Carla Gomez, Blueprint Career Services Program Administrator. “Judging by the buzz in the room, and the number of people who stayed to keep talking afterward, I’m happy to say I think we accomplished that.”

For many attendees, the event offered not only opportunities, but also clarity and confidence.

"I gained insights into the job market, and speaking with various hiring managers helped me see how I can better prepare for my career,” said event attendee Anita Lee. “I loved connecting with people from different industries, and I even got a professional headshot for LinkedIn!”

Thank you to everyone who made this event such a success. We’re already looking forward to welcoming even more members of our community to next year’s event.
