SCS is committed to making learning as accessible as possible both locally and across the globe. We are continuously expanding our list of over 540 online learning opportunities. From languages to accounting, we offer flexible learning opportunities.

Our online courses are instructor-led and delivered through the University of Toronto’s Learning Management Engine – Quercus. Quercus uses weekly, real time modules and has tools for engagement and community building. Course preparation has built in flexibility so you can read, study, and complete assignments on your own time.

You will communicate with your instructors via discussion boards and/or email. Some online courses include live, interactive webinars. If you’re unable to attend the live webinar, you will be able to view a recording of the webinar on your own schedule.

0587 - German: Level I

Course
You don't need any prior knowledge of German to take this course. You'll start with simple grammar and phonetics and engage in role-playing and other exercises that help you learn the basics of German. You'll be able to greet people, request and give information about your immediate surroundings, express simple likes and dislikes and make short statements about yourself and your family.  Begin to use appropriate German grammar, syntax and vocabulary in everyday situations. Understand how simple sentences formed in German differ from the equivalent in English. Begin to pronounce German clearly.

0588 - Italian: Level I

Course
You don't need any prior knowledge of Italian to take this course, just a love of the language. You'll start with simple grammar and phonetics and engage in role-playing and exercises that help you learn the basics of Italian. You'll be able to greet people, request and give information about your immediate surroundings and express simple likes and dislikes. You'll begin to learn how to make yourself understood when travelling in Italy or ordering in restaurants. Write a simple postcard sending holiday greetings. Make yourself understood in everyday situations about yourself and your family. Begin to pronounce Italian clearly.

0593 - Spanish: Level II

Course
If you've completed 0586 Spanish: Level I or have equivalent language skills, this course will expand your command of grammar and conversation. Role-playing, simulations and other exercises will build your essential vocabulary and your knowledge of structures, idioms and cultural etiquette. You'll be able to participate in social events at a basic level, give simple instructions and directions and describe people and places in a simple way. Use appropriate grammar, syntax and vocabulary in everyday situations. Build your essential vocabulary. Deepen your understanding of Spanish-language structures, idioms and cultural etiquette.

Course
If you've completed 0442 Japanese: Level I or possess the equivalent language skills in grammar and speech, this course will let you build your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Role-playing and exercises will increase your vocabulary and your familiarity with language structures and idioms. With a greater understanding of cultural etiquette, you'll be able to participate in social events in a basic way, give simple instructions and directions and describe people and places. To determine your Japanese language level, please take a moment to complete our Japanese Placement Exercise before registering. Use appropriate grammar, syntax and vocabulary in everyday speech about yourself and people you know. Get to know more language structures and idioms. Improve your understanding of cultural etiquette.

Course
If you've completed Levels III and IV or possess the equivalent language skills, this course will expand your ability to speak Japanese. You'll refine your grammar and idiomatic expression and your understanding of cultural etiquette. You'll learn to speak more precisely about familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school and leisure. Enhance your understanding of Japanese culture and business practices and your ability to show goodwill in a business setting. To determine your Japanese language level, please take a moment to complete our Japanese Placement Exercise before registering. Deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in Japan. Expand your knowledge of grammatical structures and idiomatic expressions. Better appreciate the role of language in Japanese history and art.

0602 - Russian: Level III

Course
If you've already completed 0580 Russian: Level II or have the equivalent language skills, this course is for you. Building on the basics you already have, you'll expand your speaking abilities until you can participate in short social exchanges, give instructions on familiar topics and activities, describe people and places in simple terms and exchange information about subjects of personal relevance. You'll be able to get more out of Russian culture and literature, especially its great novels, and more deeply enjoy travel in Russia. Use appropriate grammar, syntax and vocabulary in everyday speech about familiar topics and activities. Write a simple personal letter.

0603 - Russian: Level IV

Course
Appreciate Russian culture and literature and learn to converse with Russians. Gain a better understanding of Russia's view of itself. Learn a language that is quite different from English, with its own view of time and interpersonal relationships. In this course, you will learn more complex language structures, idioms and vocabulary. Classes emphasize speaking practice and provide ample opportunities to rehearse real-life situations. By the course's end, you will be able to express your opinions, give suggestions and relate past events. Express original thoughts using an expanded vocabulary while adhering to social and cultural etiquette.Expand your ability to speak and write Russian.
