Advanced Certificate in Accounting & Finance (ACAF)

Please note that CPA Canada has announced it will discontinue the Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance. The final three ACAF National Examinations will be taking place in September 2019, January 2020, and February 2021. The related SCS courses listed below will continue to fulfill the necessary requirements for ACAF and will be available for registration until September 2020. For those looking to take the national exam, we urge you to complete these courses as soon as possible.

The ACAF will provide you with the job-ready skills that employers across the country value within the accounting and finance functions of their businesses. The ACAF is an online education program for those aspiring to accounting careers, but not as designated CPAs. Many exciting career opportunities in accounting and finance do not require a professional accounting designation. The ACAF qualifies you for intermediate level accounting jobs in business, not-for-profit, government and accounting firms. This program is designed to enhance your existing education and experience with additional skills employers’ value.

The ACAF program is made up of 11 courses: six technical courses and five applied courses. Each course has six to eight weeks of study, followed by a study week and an in-person final examination.

What are Preparatory Courses?

Preparatory courses, previously called the CPA Prerequisite Education Program (CPA PREP), are the courses offered by CPA Ontario that encompass the entrance requirements for both the CPA PEP and the ACAF program.

  • For individuals interested in earning the ACAF, the entry and technical course requirement can be fulfilled by completing 11 preparatory courses, or equivalent through a post-secondary institution.

ACAF Program Requirements

Individuals interested in earning the ACAF are advised to submit transcript(s) to CPA Ontario for assessment. CPA Ontario will confirm your eligibility for the ACAF program and provide the best advice for achieving any missing prerequisites.

The minimum entry requirement into the ACAF program with CPA Ontario is 30 credit hours (or equivalent one year of full-time study) at a post-secondary institution or three years of relevant work experience. All entry courses and technical courses must be successfully completed before enroling in any applied courses.

CPA Ontario has recognized the following courses offered by the School of Continuing Studies towards exemptions from the ACAF entry, these include both technical and applied courses:
