The right questions can set you apart and help you turn interviews into opportunities.
When preparing for a job interview, most candidates focus on how to answer questions. But the strongest candidates know that interviews are a two-way conversation. The questions you ask can be just as important as the answers you give.
According to SCS Blueprint Career Services Career Strategist, Ann Park, asking thoughtful questions can help you stand out and build stronger connections with interviewers. Here are five questions she recommends asking recruiters during an interview:
1. Can you please repeat the question?
Nerves can make it easy to miss key details. Asking for clarification ensures you answer the question accurately and gives you a moment to gather your thoughts. Taking brief notes can help you stay focused.
2. Based on my research, I can see that your organization has successfully accomplished X,Y, and Z. I am very impressed by your organization and would be happy to play a role in what you do. What are some of the challenges that your organization is currently facing?
This will demonstrate your genuine interest in the organization and the research that you have done beforehand about them. This will also give you an opportunity to identify and share how you can help them manage their challenges.
3. What are the next steps in the hiring process?
This question demonstrates your keen interest in the position and helps you understand timelines. It can also reduce the stress of uncertainty after the interview.
4. What qualities are you looking for when choosing a candidate for this position?
The answer to this question will give you the opportunity to highlight any matches in skills or experience they are seeking that you may not have already shared.
5. What do you enjoy most about working for your organization?
This will incite excitement and enthusiasm from the interviewers and give you an opportunity to echo your excitement about the possibility of working for their organization. Providing an opportunity for interviewers to talk about their experience can also help you build rapport with them.
