Japanese

Spoken by more than 130 million people, Japanese is distinguished by a system of honorifics reflecting the nature of Japanese society. The language’s sound inventory is relatively small and it has a lexically distinct pitch-accent system. The written language combines three different scripts. Vocabulary has been heavily influenced by loans from other languages, especially Chinese and English. Japanese film had a major influence on 20th-century cinematography. Japanese fiction, and the anime and manga of Japanese popular culture are trend-setting today.
