Certificate in Latin

Latin was the language of the Roman Republic and Roman Empire. Although now an extinct language with very few fluent speakers, Latin continues in areas such as law, medicine and botany. Romance languages are descended from Vulgar Latin, and many words adapted from Latin are found in modern languages, including English. Its literature and oratory inspired Western writers throughout history. Its study is a key to the understanding of Western civilization. In this program you will learn the basic structure of the Latin language, and study its style and its influence on our language. You will develop an ability to read the language that scholars have treasured for two millennia through works such as the Aeneid by Virgil, and the lyric poetry of Catullus and Horace.

The primary objectives of this program are to assist learners to:

  • Understand and translate standard elementary-level Latin sentences into English
  • Illustrate use of the Latin case forms and the Latin verb tenses
  • Achieve a functional reading ability in Latin
  • Become acquainted with some Latin epic poetry
